Maternity BVM holds new kind of Spirit Day

Fifth-grader Michael Walsh and 2019 BVM graduate Carly Walsh.

Maternity BVM faculty and staff last week organized a drive-by parade on what would normally be Spirit Day.

Principal Mary Zawisza and the Rev. Paul Quinter, the church pastor, joined teachers on both sides of the parking lot as parents drove students in cars that were decorated with blue and white balloons and streamers. Parents honked their horns as teachers waved pom-poms. Many kids and their teachers held signs such as “Panthers Pride” and “BVM Strong.”

Typically, the school would hold a barbecue on Spirit Day. Instead, Quinter celebrated an Ascension Thursday Mass on Zoom.

Mrs. Z, the principal, held a sign that read, “We Love You. BVM Proud.” She said plans have not been finalized for the eighth-graders’ June 10 graduation. ••
