2nd PDAC talks crime, homeless, upcoming events

The 2nd Police District Advisory Council last week returned from its summer recess, meeting at district headquarters at 7306 Castor Ave.

Community leaders met with Capt. James Kimrey, the commander; community relations officer Mark Mroz; and victims assistance officer Danielle Walsh.

Mroz said there were some positive events in the summer, including National Night Out and a community bike ride, bookbag giveaways with state Sen. Tina Tartaglione and a new park in Castor Gardens engineered by state Rep. Jared Solomon and the WeLoveU Foundation.

Mroz explained that the district rejected a bid by Chuck’s Alibi, a bar/restaurant at 7301 Oxford Ave., to obtain a special assembly license for live entertainment. Chuck’s can appeal to the city Department of Licenses and Inspections.

The license was denied because of a May 8 murder that took place outside the bar, when a woman on Oxford Avenue was shot twice in the chest by the front-seat passenger of a car. The victim and the shooter had apparently been arguing earlier inside the bar over a man who had previously been murdered. Two officers were on location due to past parking and noise issues and social media promotion of a party that night. Body cam footage, police said, does not show the victim assaulting the other woman before the shooting.

The 2nd district is urging people mailing checks to deposit them inside a post office building, not in a corner mailbox or in a box outside a postal building. Crooks are stealing checks, changing the payable amount and “pay to the order of” name and depositing them into accounts controlled by them.

Walsh distributed information on the city’s homeless street outreach division. Anyone concerned about the safety of a homeless person or those around them can call 215-232-1984, a 24/7/365 hotline.

In other news, City Councilman Brian O’Neill will hold a recycling bin giveaway on Saturday,  Oct. 1, from 9-11 a.m., at his office at 432 Rhawn St.

Also on Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. to noon, Rep. Jared Solomon will hold a senior fair at St. William’s hall, 6200 Rising Sun Ave. (entrance at Argyle and Robbins streets). There will be light refreshments, property tax/rent rebate forms, SEPTA senior ID cards and information on unclaimed property.

There will be a community health fair on Oct. 15, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Roosevelt Mall. The event will include COVID testing, dental screenings, giveaways to pregnant women, soft pretzels and water.

The 2nd PDAC will meet again on Oct. 11. ••
