Date set for Mayfair Fallen Heroes Run and May Fair events

The Mayfair Fallen Heroes Run & Walk and the Mayfair May Fair will take place on Saturday, May 16, rain or shine.

The Fallen Heroes Run & Walk, starting at 8:30 a.m., is coordinated by the Mayfair Business Association, Mayfair Civic Association and Mayfair Community Development Corporation.

Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, Precision Mechanical Services and International Association of Fire Fighters Local 22 are the sponsors.

The honoree for the run/walk will be Gerry Pellegrini, a Philadelphia police officer and Pennsylvania National Guard member killed in 2005 in the Iraq War.

The cost is $20 by May 4 and $25 after May 4. Registration on the day of the event will be from 7:30 to 8:20 a.m. at Mayfair Memorial Playground, Rowland Avenue and Vista Street. The starting line is at Rowland and Ryan avenues.

Proceeds benefit the FOP Lodge 5 survivors fund and the continued rebuilding of Mayfair Memorial Playground. Go to www.mayfairrun.com

At the May Fair, sponsored by the Mayfair Business Association, Frankford Avenue will be closed from Cottman Avenue to Bleigh Avenue from noon to 5 p.m. There will be live music, sidewalk sales, giveaways, video games, military vehicles, craft vendors, carnival games, a Grey Lodge beer garden, a Moonbounce and a soft pretzel-eating contest.

Parking will be free on Frankford Avenue, from Harbison Avenue to Rhawn Street.

The Mayfair CDC’s Jim Berghaier will be given the Mayfair Award. He’s credited with beautifying Frankford Avenue. A Father Judge High School graduate, he is a veteran of the Vietnam War and is a former police officer. He helped rescue Birdie Africa during the city’s confrontation with the radical group MOVE in 1985.

Kevin Ferguson, of Infinity Jewelers, will accept the Business of the Year award.

Mayoral candidate Jim Kenney, City Councilman Bobby Henon and state Rep. John Taylor will attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 12:30 p.m. as Prudential changes its real estate office name to Berkshire Hathaway. The office is at Frankford Avenue and Aldine Street.

• The Grey Lodge, 6235 Frankford Ave., invites the public to meet an author and four political candidates on Friday, April 24. Jon McGoran will sell and sign copies of his ecological thrillers Drift and Deadout from 6 to 9 p.m.

Democratic City Councilman Bill Greenlee will arrive at 6 p.m. Republican candidates Matt Wolfe for Council and Chris Sawyer for sheriff will attend at 7. Republican mayoral nominee Melissa Murray Bailey will be on hand at 8.

• Beneficial Bank, at Tyson and Brous avenues, will host a business card exchange and networking event on Tuesday, April 28, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

• The Mayfair Farmers’ Market will be open every other Sunday from May 3 to Oct. 18, along the 3500 block of Ryan Ave. The market will also be open on the third Thursday night from June through October.

The author is married to Lou DePaul, manager of the National Penn Bank branch at 6633 Roosevelt Blvd., where last week’s meeting was held.
