Guilty plea, prison for fortune telling scheme

After two prior criminal convictions for offenses linked to her fortune telling businesses, you would think that Rhawnhurst resident April Uwanawich would’ve seen her latest legal troubles coming. Instead, Chester County authorities collared her again, leading to her guilty plea on June 1. A judge ordered Uwanawich, 37, of the 1600 block of Borbeck Ave., to serve 14 days to 12 months in a county lockup, followed by six months of house arrest and three years of probation for taking more than $10,000 from two women in exchange for assurances she could rid them of evil curses.


Off-duty officer shoots, kills armed robber in Lawndale

A Philadelphia police detective had just punched out for the evening, but he still had his gun. And it proved priceless on June 4 as he foiled an armed robbery of a Lawndale pizzeria, wounding one crook fatally and forcing another to flee.


Suspect waives hearing in NE murder case

A North Philadelphia man accused of kidnapping two other men for ransom, shooting both and dumping them in Crescentville waived his preliminary hearing on May 27. Ken Thomas, 24, faces charges of murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, robbery, kidnapping, weapons violations and conspiracy. Authorities have not disclosed whom Thomas may have conspired with in the crime.
