Thursday morning food giveaways continue in Lawncrest

Lawncrest Community Association secretary Phil Grutzmacher hands a food box to a local resident.

Elected officials, civic leaders and business owners last week joined forces to distribute 720 boxes of food in the St. William Catholic Church/MaST Charter School parking lot, 6200 Rising Sun Ave.

When the giveaway debuted on May 21, all 500 boxes were handed out. The boxes given away on May 28 were filled with fruits and vegetables. The giveaway will continue each Thursday at 10 a.m. until further notice, with the boxes filled by the Philly Food Share Program.

Sponsors are state Reps. Jared Solomon and Isabella Fitzgerald; the Lawncrest Community Association; state Sen. Tina Tartaglione; City Councilwoman Cherelle Parker; the 2nd Police District; car dealer Gary Barbera; and Mike Dixon, of the Smoker’s Zone, 6810 Rising Sun Ave.

The event is promoted on Facebook, through fliers and by St. William, Presentation BVM, Solomon and Barbera.

The 2nd district was represented by community relations officer Mark Mroz and crime prevention officer Maureen Ciamaichelo, who handed out activities books and crayons.

Councilwoman Parker handed out protective masks. Barbera, Fitzgerald and LCA president Bill Dolbow were among those giving boxes to people who lined up in the parking lot or drove by on Rising Sun Avenue. ••

Motorists were invited to pull up on the 6200 block of Rising Sun Ave. to receive a box of food.
