The fight to end hunger

McMenamin Family ShopRite, 9910 Frankford Ave. (at Morrell Avenue), last week celebrated the results of National Hunger Action Month.

In September, ShopRite employees in Pennsylvania and five other states participated in a friendly competition to support the company’s hunger initiative, Partners in Caring.

The Morrell Plaza store, under the leadership of store director Mike Semeriglia, raised $12,157 for food banks through the collection of donations at checkout and dine-ins and take-outs at local restaurants.

The April 19 Ending Hunger Together event honored employees Ryan Carey (a former cashier now working in courtesy) and Suzanne Herring (a cashier), who are featured on a special-edition Cheerios box, for leading the store’s fundraising. There are 250,000 boxes – $5.99 for a two-pack – featuring Carey, Herring and honorees from other ShopRite stores.

Carey and Herring also signed a commemorative poster.

Among those in attendance were representatives of City Councilman Brian O’Neill, state Rep. Ed Neilson, the 8th Police District, Engine 46 and Redeemer Health Food Pantry.

In addition, St. Hubert cheerleaders Julianne Bucci, Cecelia Zaleski, Victoria Montanez, Nicolette Shupe and Sophia Sermarini performed a “Fight Hunger” cheer. Cheerleaders were also at the store last September for “Help Bag Hunger” day.

The ShopRite Partners In Caring program has been in existence since 1999, and has raised nearly $51 million to support more than 2,200 charities. ••
