State reps endorse Commissioner Deeley; Castille backs Wolfe in Council race

State Reps. Ed Neilson, Kevin Boyle, Joe Hohenstein and Mike Driscoll have endorsed Lisa Deeley, chairwoman of the city election commission.

“Lisa is the only candidate who has run a successful election before, and this experience is vital for 2020; which will be the most important election of our lifetimes,” Driscoll said.

Deeley is a longtime Rhawnhurst resident who now lives in East Torresdale.

“Lisa has turned around an office that was in disarray,” Neilson said, “creating a hub of information for all Philadelphians.”

Deeley is among 13 Democrats on the ballot. The top two advance to the general election.

“Lisa’s civics program in our schools has changed the way we teach students about voting,” Boyle said, “Bringing in voting machines to the schools allows kids to feel a part of the process and will help them all become active voters as adults.”

Deeley and Omar Sabir are endorsed by the Democratic City Committee. Commissioner Al Schmidt is the only Republican in the race. Unless an independent or minor-party candidate enters the race, Schmidt and the top two Democrats will be guaranteed victory in November.

“Commissioner Deeley has worked to create an updated campaign finance system that is transparent and allows voters to see where candidates are getting their donations. Reforms like these are why we need Lisa in office,” Hohenstein said.

Ron Castille, former Philadelphia district attorney and chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, endorsed Republican Matt Wolfe in Tuesday’s City Council at large primary.

Castille, in a “Dear Fellow Republicans” letter, wrote, “When I was your District Attorney, I had enough confidence in Matt to appoint him to be a Special Assistant District Attorney to work with my Nuisance Bar Task Force. I still have confidence in him to work to bring common sense and a strong independent voice back to City Hall. Matt plans to attack many problems, such as End Philadelphia’s Sanctuary City Status; Stop so called “safe” injection sites before they get started; Repeal the soda tax and bring jobs back to Philadelphia; Bring spending under control so that we can start to lower other taxes and spur economic growth.”

Wolfe is one of seven Republicans running for five nominations. ••
