Philadelphia Protestant Home residents collected more than 1,900 pairs of socks during Sox Week, Jan. 2-10, as their Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service project.
The socks were delivered last week to the Joy of Sox, a Radnor-based nonprofit founded in 2010 that seeks to provide each homeless person in the United States six pairs of socks every year.
The Joy of Sox has also reached folks in England, Ukraine, Afghanistan and Uganda. In all, the nonprofit has distributed more than 1 million pairs of socks.
At PPH, 6401 Martins Mill Road, residents and staff were encouraged to donate new and never-used packaged socks. Or, they could donate $2, and the committee organizing the collection would buy a pair of socks with the money.
In addition to Sox Week, residents held an MLK observance program in the social hall on Jan. 15. The event featured music, prayer, a video, speakers and a photo slideshow recognizing PPH staff.
Residents also coordinate a monthly food drive for the needy that began as a Day of Service project in 2020. ••
