Volunteers with the Friends of Poquessing Watershed found Peppermint Patties wrappers, dozens of them, during their monthly cleanup on July 8 in the area of Hegerman Street and St. Denis Terrace in the Northeast’s Brookhaven section.

And now members of the park advocacy group are trying to solve the mystery of who put the wrappers there in the first place.

The workers collected nine trash bags of debris from the woods and park surrounding the Poquessing Creek. They also removed numerous rolls of discarded carpeting, two folding chairs, two car tires, an umbrella, a boot, a pair of socks and four golf balls. But the bagful of shiny silver candy packages really captured their attention.

During a similar cleanup in the same area in July 2016, volunteers found a similar trail of wrappers extending the length of the park, about one-quarter mile from the aforementioned intersection to Stevenson Street on the Holy Family University campus.

“My hope is that the Peppermint Pattie-loving litterbug happens upon this article and sees the error of his or her ways,” the friends group wrote in its online newsletter. “Please take your wrappers with you and show some respect to the others who enjoy this beautiful park.”

The Friends of Poquessing Watershed holds monthly cleanups at various locations along the creek on the second Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The next cleanup will be on Aug. 12 at Street and Richelieu roads on the Bensalem side of the creek.
