Oktoberfest celebration is Saturday in Mayfair

The Mayfair Business Association is promoting a number of initiatives this fall.

The group is teaming with the Mayfair Community Development Corporation for an Oktoberfest celebration on Saturday, Sept. 27. The day will start with the 44th German-American Steuben Parade, which will begin at noon. The route travels south on Frankford Avenue from Rhawn Street to Cottman Avenue.

Ryan Avenue will be closed from noon to 4 p.m. There will be food, beer, music and vendors.

In other news from the Sept. 11 meeting, held at Beneficial Bank:

• The final Mayfair 3rd Thursday will take place on Thursday, Oct. 16, from 5 to 9 p.m. along the 3500 block of Ryan Ave. There will be produce, crafts, live music, food, beer and children’s activities.

• Mayfair Memorial Playground, at Rowland Avenue and Vista Street, will hold its third annual Spook-tacular on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to noon. The event is for kids under age 10. The cost is $3. Kids should come in costume, and will be allowed to decorate a pumpkin, play Halloween-themed games and collect candy from sponsors’ tables.

• The annual Mayfair Holmesburg Thanksgiving Parade is set for Sunday, Nov. 23, at noon along Frankford Avenue. The rain date is Nov. 30. To participate, call 215–624–6660.

• Joe DeFelice, chairman of the Mayfair CDC, said there have been “minimal complaints” about the new methadone clinic at Frankford Avenue and Decatur Street. Jeff Dempsey, an aide to state Rep. Kevin Boyle, said his office has received “zero” complaints.

• The Devon Theater remains for sale. The current owner recently opened it for two live performances, but the theater otherwise remains dark.

• The former 7-Eleven building at 6401 Frankford Ave. has been leased for two years by the convenience store’s parent, Southland Corporation. The new tenant is unknown.

• Business owners expressed concern about a man who they said begs for money on the 7300 block of Frankford Ave. They describe him as wearing baggy pants and appearing intoxicated.

Merchants are also displeased that customers of the popular FlynnO’Hara uniform store at 6243 Frankford Ave. are asking to use bathrooms at their shops.

• The Mayfair Business Association will meet on Thursday, Oct. 9, at 10 a.m. at Republic Bank, 7300 Frankford Ave. ••
