FOP backs Tinney in Republican Council primary

Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 endorsed Dan Tinney in the Republican primary for City Council at large.

“We are very proud to endorse Dan Tinney for City Council at large in the primary election. Tinney is a neighborhood guy with strong ties to our members in the community. We believe he will always support our brothers and sisters in blue in City Hall. Our members need allies in City Hall now more than ever,” said FOP President John McNesby.

Tinney, GOP leader of the 66th Ward, is one of seven Republicans seeking five nominations in the May 21 primary.

“I am very humbled and honored to receive the endorsement of the FOP. Their support means so much to me because they represent so many of my family, friends and neighbors in Northeast Philadelphia. They sacrifice so much at such great personal expense. I will be a strong voice for the police community in City Hall,” Tinney said.

As a recent guest panelist on the Dean Malik Show (WWDB 860 AM), 6th Councilmanic District Republican candidate Pete Smith criticized the Kenney administration on its handling of the opioid crisis.

Smith, who is challenging Democratic Councilman Bobby Henon, wants opioid users to have more of an opportunity to go through a detox program. He said that, once the user is clean from detox, they can be given mental health evaluations, assessments to determine treatment, counseling and support.

The candidate noted that more than 1,000 Philadelphians a year die from opioid overdoses. He favors harsher penalties on dealers, including homicide charges if linked to an overdose death.
