Six local high school senior basketball players competed in Sunday’s 37th annual All Star Labor Classic, presented by the Philadelphia Building & Construction Trades Council, at Holy Family University.

The city defeated the suburbs in both games.

The girls won, 49-46. Local girls who played were Leyshka Ruperto (Frankford), Meghan Colfer (Little Flower) and Meiara Staton (Franklin Towne).

The boys won, 96-95. Local boys who played were Greg Weiss (Archbishop Ryan), Laquan Byrd (Father Judge) and Anthony Lilly (Father Judge). Lilly hit a 3-pointer with 40 seconds to play to put his team up by a point, and the city held on to win. Weiss also made a key basket to tie the score down the stretch of the come-from-behind victory.

Each player received a $500 college scholarship.

The building trades presented a $207,050 check to their charity partner, the Superhero Project, which helps parents of prematurely born infants stay connected to their babies while they’re in hospital NICUs through its “Angel Eye Camera” technology. Before the all-star games, Labor All Stars faced the Media/Alumni All Stars in a game that, by tradition, ended in a tie. Among the players for Media/Alumni were state Sen. Jimmy Dillon, City Councilman Isaiah Thomas, legislative candidate Sean Dougherty and Northeast Times editor Tom Waring.

Mayor Cherelle Parker tossed up the opening jump ball in the Labor vs. Media/Alumni game. Dougherty took and won the tip for Media/Alumni. ••
