Home Depot helps spruce up American Legion Oxley Post

Team Home Depot last week performed renovations to American Legion William D. Oxley Post 133, 4637 Decatur St.

About 40 employees of the home improvement store worked two days to gut the aging kitchen, installing new flooring, cabinets, a sink, countertop and backsplash. They also placed new floor tiles and painted the walls in the main hall.

The donated labor was in addition to more than $12,000 in material donated by the Home Depot Foundation, which has committed $500 million to fund veterans’ projects through 2025.

“This is an incredible effort,” said Bob Cummings, Oxley’s chaplain.

The employees who volunteered their time were from the Home Depot at Castor and Aramingo avenues. They, like employees at each Home Depot store, take part in two veterans-related projects per year.

“This is a good way to thank veterans and show gratitude for their service,” said Team Home Depot captain Cesar Evangelista.

Prior to the work by Team Home Depot, the glaziers union donated and installed new windows.

“That was a big deal for us,” Cummings said. “They had seven guys here all day on Veterans Day.”

Oxley members used some of the Home Depot supplies to put in a new drop ceiling, with new lighting.

The exterior of the post was upgraded in November, when Mural Arts Philadelphia painted a mural.
