Holmesburg Civic Association gets I-95 update

Holmesburg Civic Association members last week listened to an update on I-95 construction from PennDOT officials Elaine Elbich and Harold Windisch.

The construction in the Northeast, other parts of the city and in the suburbs will last for years to come.

Rich Frizell, president of the civic group, hopes for temporary repairs to roads on State Road, New State Road, Milnor Street and Bleigh Avenue.

In other news from the Feb. 10 meeting:

• NorthEast Treatment Centers will hold a job fair on Saturday, Feb. 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Holmesburg Recreation Center, 4500 Rhawn St.

NET is opening a methadone clinic in the spring at 7520–50 State Road. The facility will offer other services, too.

Applications will be accepted from qualified, experienced individuals for the positions of facilities technicians, director of nursing, licensed practical nurses, counselors, a clinical supervisor and therapeutic support staff for children with autism.

• The Zoning Board of Adjustment rejected a proposal for a one-chair hair salon for men, women and children at 8160 Terry St. (at Welsh Road). The property had been a barber shop years ago, and civic members unanimously voted in favor of it at their January meeting. The owners will appeal.

A ZBA hearing on zoning legalization for Full Armor Training baseball academy, 7327 State Road, was postponed because of snow. The civic group approved the facility last month.

• The meeting attracted representatives of state Reps. Kevin Boyle and Mike Driscoll, City Controller Alan Butkovitz, U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle and U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey.

Dave Wyszynski, who worked 15 years for former state Rep. Mike McGeehan, is now on Driscoll’s staff. The office is located at 3294 Red Lion Road (at Calera Road) in Academy Plaza. The phone number is 215–281–3414.

Brendan Boyle’s new office is at 2375 Woodward St. Aide Jim Kennedy said Boyle has kept the same phone number as predecessors Allyson Schwartz, Joe Hoeffel and Bob Borski. It is 215–335–3355.

• Holmesburg Recreation Center is looking for children for its tot rec program, which runs September to June.

Children 3 and 4 years old can attend Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon. Children 4 and 5 years old can attend weekdays from 9 a.m. to noon.
