COVID-19 increasing in Philadelphia

Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley warned that younger people are more commonly getting the virus.

On Thursday the city announced there were 143 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, continuing the slow increase of the virus in the city.

Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley said about a third of the past week’s new cases have been in people under 30, some of whom had traveled to the shore.

“We urge residents to take caution if they plan to visit shore points this holiday weekend,” Farley said, mentioning wearing masks, remaining safely distant from others and frequently washing hands.

Wearing a face mask is now mandatory in all public spaces in the state, Gov. Tom Wolf announced yesterday. Wolf said the order, which mandates that masks be worn when people can’t maintain proper distance from each other, is essential as cases in the state increase again.

There have been a total of 26,400 confirmed cases of the virus in the city. There have been 1,614 total deaths, 830 of which were long-term care facility residents.
