Eighth-grader Jomal Mathew will compete in National Geographic’s Pennsylvania competition on Friday.
Jomal Mathew, an eighth-grader at Maternity BVM Elementary School, has qualified for the National Geographic Bee’s Pennsylvania competition.
The contest will be held on Friday at the State Museum in Harrisburg.
Jomal, one of three Philadelphia-area qualifiers, won his school’s competition, then took a 70-question online test to earn a spot in the state contest.
“We are very proud of Jomal and wish him good luck in Harrisburg,” said Rosemary Washburn, his social studies teacher.
Jomal described himself as “nervous but confident, for this is the second time I have qualified. If I practice hard, I think I’ll do well.”
State winners will journey to Washington, D.C. for the national competition, May 20–23. ••
