Renovated Palmer Playground field no longer “the pits”

City Councilman Brian O’Neill and softball players from Sluggersville stand on the renovated field at Palmer Playground.

City Councilman Brian O’Neill threw out the first pitch last week at Palmer Playground, 3035 Comly Road, before a girls softball game between teams from Sluggersville.

The field, in the rear of the playground, was formerly known as “the pit.” The infield was filled with weeds and was not level, and there were holes in the ground, making it unsafe for players. The field went mostly unused.

O’Neill directed city capital budget money to fix up the field, and the Department of Parks and Recreation renovated it. There is a new dirt infield, fencing, backstop and painted player benches. The councilman said it might be time for improved lighting because the field is getting more use. ••
