Bustleton Civic League holds first virtual meeting of the year

COVID-19, zoning cases and UPS were the main topics of discussion at the civic league’s January virtual meeting.

About 30 Bustleton residents gathered virtually for the year’s first Greater Bustleton Civic League meeting, which saw discussions on two zoning cases and other updates in the neighborhood.

GBCL president Jack O’Hara said he had spoken to city officials about the lack of COVID-19 testing sites available in the 19115 ZIP code. Currently, the CVS Pharmacy at 9875 Bustleton Ave. is the only location in Bustleton that offers testing. Free walkup testing will be held in the parking lot of American Heritage Federal Credit Union, 2060 Red Lion Road, on Feb. 20 and Feb. 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. No appointment is needed.

In a pair of fairly straightforward zoning presentations, the first zoning case was from the owners of 9721 Dedaker St. who requested to install a shed in their backyard larger than the limit. They are requesting the shed to store a therapy tub and other equipment for their sons with special needs.

The owners at 1325 Grant Ave. requested a variance to convert a garage into a living space and for space in their front yard that was already paved to be used as a parking space.

Discussions for both cases were relatively straightforward. GBCL members have a few days to submit their votes after the virtual meeting concludes.

In response to the UPS distribution facility planned to be built at 1 Red Lion Road, O’Hara said an engineer hired by GBCL found that the traffic plan approved by PennDOT and the city Department of Streets had underestimated the amount of vehicle traffic the site would generate. In response, PennDOT has asked UPS to justify the projections.

GBCL meets virtually the fourth Wednesday of each month. ••
