St. Christopher teachers ride Somerton streets, get well wishes from families

Lindsay Street residents showed support for St. Christopher Elementary School teachers who drove through the neighborhood.

St. Christopher Elementary School teachers wanted to show their pupils how much they miss them.

So, on Wednesday morning, they took part in a 26-vehicle caravan through the streets of Somerton.

Longtime principal Mary Tremper joined the trek, which took faculty to blocks on Lindsay, Edison, Kelvin, Napier, Dorothy, Lindenhurst, Worthington, Stevens, Warwick and Priestly and around Boyle Playground.

Bridget Comas, who teaches Pre-K 3, lives in Somerton and knows the area, so she led the way.

Vehicles were decorated with green and yellow balloons and signs and writings such as, “Miss Reed misses Room 301,” “St. Chris Strong” and “Mrs. Callaghan says wash your hands, doo doo doo doo,” with a picture of Baby Shark.

Bridget Comas, a Pre-K 3 teacher, decorated her vehicle and led a caravan of St. Christopher Elementary School faculty through the streets of Somerton to show how much they missed their students.

The teachers used email and Facebook to tell students, parents, parishioners and others about the procession. They beeped their horns along the route.

Plenty of people of all ages, along with dogs, greeted the teachers, waving to them and holding signs such as “We miss St. Chris” and “McFillin rocks.”

Since the school has been closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, students have been learning online.

Afterward, the teachers got to see one another for the first time in a few weeks, catching up with one another while keeping a social distance. ••
