Catholic League wrestling parents, alums donate $3,000 to Sgt. O’Connor family fund

Catholic League wrestling parents and alumni donated $3,000 to a fund to benefit the family of Jimmy O’Connor, the police sergeant from Millbrook murdered in the line of duty in Frankford in March.

The coronavirus pandemic forced cancellation of the annual Catholic League wrestling banquet, scheduled to be held at Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5. Parents who paid for their tickets donated the money to the fund for O’Connor.

Banquet organizer Bill Hunter, a former coach at North Catholic and Bishop McDevitt, worked with O’Connor in SWAT. Both graduated from North Catholic.

Hunter, fellow officer Joe Cooney and Sgt. John Swift presented FOP vice president Mike Trask with the donation.

The award winners who were to be honored at the banquet will still be recognized. They are Father Judge senior Eamonn Logue (Hal Selvey Award for unselfish dedication and leadership), referee Bob McCarney (Bud Lindholm Award, for service to Philadelphia wrestling), Conwell-Egan’s Chuckie Connor (Catholic League Coach of the Year) and Ursinus coach Joe Jamison (Travis Manion Award, for career achievements). ••
