Boys & Girls Club sends toiletries to youth shelter

Dozens of toiletries are on their way to a Germantown homeless shelter, courtesy of the Northeast Frankford Boys & Girls Club.

The Keystone Club, a program within the larger Boys & Girls Club, collected shampoo, conditioner, soap, baby lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes and other personal hygiene products.

The items will make their way to the Covenant House, which provides shelter to the homeless, runaways and young people who were victims of human trafficking.

Nashay Bey, a 16-year-old Keystone Club member and junior at the High School of Engineering and Science, attended the July 31?? meeting of the Rotary Club of Frankford-Northeast. She was joined by Jeannie Sledge-Alexander, the drill team coordinator for the local Boys & Girls Club.

The donations were accepted by Dave Ellis, governor of Rotary District 7450, and Carol Hart Metzker, a past president of the Rotary Club of West Chester Downtown and a former District 7450 Rotarian of the Year.

Ellis, a 41-year-member of the Rotary Club of Exton-Frazer and a four-time president, was the guest speaker. He’s a former Eagle Scout and U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He spent his professional life as a successful travel agent before retiring in January.

In his address, he encouraged members to mix fun activities with their service efforts.

In noting the importance of building membership, he presented certificates to the newest member (Joe Lyons) and the current member who recruited him (Joe Cohill).

Also, he presented a Rotary 4-Way Test coin to member Russ Urzi to encourage him to bring in a new member. Once the new member is on board, Urzi is to pass the coin on to another member.

The Rotary Club of Frankford-Northeast meets every Tuesday from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. at Cannstatter’s, at 9130 Academy Road. ••
