A hit-and-run crash claimed the life of a Lower Mayfair man in Rhawnhurst early Sunday.
Nilton Monteir, 51, of the 2800 block of Devereaux Ave., was on foot in the crosswalk at the northeast corner of Castor and Cottman avenues at about 1:36 a.m. when a car struck him. The vehicle, a white 2000 Chevy Impala, was traveling northbound on Castor and disappeared from the scene. Police later found the unoccupied car at Shelmire Avenue and Horrocks Street, about two blocks away.

Paramedics took Monteir to Aria-Jefferson’s Torresdale campus. He had severe head and chest trauma, police said, and was pronounced dead shortly after 4 a.m.
Police have no description of the driver. ••
