Career training class planned

JEVS Project WOW (World of Work) is holding enrollment for its free career training class that starts on Oct. 24 at Orleans Technical College, 2770 Red Lion Road.

The 24-week program is for low-income high school dropouts, ages 18–24, residing in Philadelphia.

Project WOW students gain hands-on training in weatherization and property maintenance/repair, such as basic skills in carpentry, plumbing and electrical. Project WOW also includes GED test preparation; professional development throughout the program for students to work on developing a résumé and interviewing skills; and in-house job search assistance with a JEVS employment specialist. School car wash on Saturday

The Nazareth Academy Grade School Parent Association will hold a car wash at the school, 4701 Grant Ave., on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call 215–637–7777. ••

Car Show will be held Oct. 1

The Double Eagle Car Show, hosted by Valley of Philadelphia Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, will be held Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cannstatter Volksfest Verein, 9130 Academy Road. The rain date is Oct. 8.

All years, makes and models are welcome. There will be music, food, games and trophies. Registration is $20. Spectator admission is $5.

Church announces casino trip to AC

Holy Innocents Church is sponsoring a trip to the Tropicana Casino in Atlantic City on Sunday, Oct. 2.

A bus will depart the church, L Street and Hunting Park Avenue, at 9 a.m.

Payment of $30 is due by Sept. 25.

Each person will receive $25 in slot cash.

The bus will leave the Tropicana at 4:30 p.m.

Festival Saturday at local church

Holmesburg Baptist Church, 7927 Frankford Ave., will host a community festival on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There will be representatives from 20 organizations, including Jeanes Hospital, the Philadelphia Water Department, Health Partners/CHIP, PECO Energy and the Philadelphia Police Department.

Guests will receive free blood pressure checks and flu shots with insurance cards.

Anyone who brings a canned good donation for the King’s Kitchen will receive a free hot dog. The day will also include prizes and crafts for kids.

Health & Wellness Fair planned at KleinLife

KleinLife and Temple Health/Jeanes Hospital are teaming up for a Health & Wellness Fair to be held at KleinLife, 10100 Jamison Ave., Wednesday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to noon. The event is free.

“The Health & Wellness Fair also will coincide with National Women’s Health & Fitness Day and will offer everything from health screenings and information about primary care to breast health, ophthalmology, stroke awareness, nutrition, in-home care and free assisted living placement, diabetes prevention, emergency services, cancer care and pharmaceuticals. There also will be exercise demonstrations,” said Sue Aistrop, director of community service for RSVP Philadelphia and KleinLife’s director of the onsite Wellness Center.

In addition, there will be information about KleinLife’s new dental program, orthopedics, wound care, sleep disorders and more.

Celebration for Tacony historical designation

The Historical Society of Tacony will be hosting a reception to celebrate the establishment of the Tacony-Disston Community Development National Historic District, which was made official by the National Parks Service and Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in the summer.

The reception will be held at the Engine 38 firehouse community room at Keystone Street and Magee Avenue on Thursday, Oct. 6, at 6:30 p.m.

There will be refreshments and guest speakers as well as an exhibit of historic Tacony images and documents. The individuals who provided the research that led to the historical designation will be recognized. ••

Murt holding Senior Expo this Friday

State Rep. Thomas Murt (R-152nd dist.) will hold his annual Senior Citizen Expo, on Friday, Sept. 23, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Huntingdon Valley Library, 625 Red Lion Road in Huntingdon Valley.

Dozens of exhibitors will be on hand, including representatives from government agencies, utility companies, hospitals and medical insurance companies, to show seniors and their families what services are available for their needs. The event is free. For information, call 215–674–3755. ••

Job opportunities available for veterans

The Union League and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Hiring our Heroes will hold a veterans hiring event and career day at the Union League, 140 S. Broad St., on Monday, Sept. 26, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

More than 45 companies with job openings will participate. There will be career workshops on personal skills for job interviewing and resumes.

Free business attire will be provided for those in need. The event is free for veterans and their family members and includes lunch and coffee.

Dress code is business casual.

Bariatric sessions at Nazareth Hospital

Nazareth Hospital, 2601 Holme Ave., will host free information sessions on bariatric surgery options for people who are looking to lose weight.

KleinLife organizes cemetery visits

To help area seniors visit the graves of family members and friends in Delaware County, KleinLife is organizing an excursion on Friday, Sept. 23.

The trip will depart from KleinLife, located at 10100 Jamison Avenue, at 10 a.m.

There will be visits to three Jewish cemeteries. They are Mt. Jacob Cemetery, 700 W. Oak Lane, Glenolden; Mt. Sharon Cemetery, 500 E. Springfield Road, Springfield; and Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, 1200 Bartram Ave., Collingdale.

Designer Bag Bingo event at FOP

The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 Auxiliary will holds its fourth annual Designer Bag Bingo on Sunday, Oct. 2, from 1 to 4 p.m. at FOP Lodge 5, 11630 Caroline Road.

Doors open at 12:15 p.m.

The cost is $40. There will be 12 games of bingo, a hot buffet lunch, coffee, soda, a 50/50 and auction baskets.

Philadelphia Doo Wop Festival at FOP

The Philadelphia Doo Wop Festival will take place on Sunday, Sept. 25, from 2 to 7 p.m. at Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, 11630 Caroline Road.

The cost is $25 and includes food, draft beer, soda, live entertainment from 12 area vocal groups, DJs from oldies radio stations, record collector vendors and dancing. Proceeds benefit the FOP Lodge 5 Survivors Fund.

Mario roast at Paddy Whacks this Friday

The Fake Philly Friars will be performing a costumed roast of the video game character Mario on Friday, Sept. 23, at 7:30 p.m. at Paddy Whacks Irish Sports Pub, 9241–43 Roosevelt Blvd.

Boyle holding Senior Lunch and Expo

State Rep. Kevin Boyle will be holding a Senior Lunch and Expo on Thursday, Sept, 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Villages of Pine Valley Club House, 8601 Pine Road.

The event is free and includes information, free health screenings and giveaways.

Boyle’s staff will also be available to assist with information regarding state-related programs such as PACE and the Property Tax/Rent Rebate program. In addition, local and state agencies will be present to talk to seniors about their services.
