Meeting to discuss district plans

The City Planning Commission will host its first public meeting for the Lower Far Northeast and Upper Far Northeast district plans on Wednesday, Sept. 21, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at St. John Neumann Center, 10400 Roosevelt Blvd. Residents, business people, property owners and developers are all welcome to attend for free.

The district planning process is part of Philadelphia 2035, the commission’s citywide planning project.

The Sept. 21 session will be the first of three rounds of public meetings. City planners will explain the district plan process and present existing conditions in the affected districts.

Attendees will view a brief presentation and take part in facilitated group exercises. They will discuss opportunities for and barriers to community development and investment.

Movie about combatting drugs

Angels in Motion will present Generation Found, an unprecedented and intimate look at Houston’s solution to the war on drugs for youth, families and communities fighting adolescent substance abuse, on Monday, Sept. 19, at 7:30 p.m. at AMC Philadelphia Mills, 1149 Franklin Mills Circle. Created by Greg Williams and Jeff Reilly, the film chronicles the work of the Houston Recovery Initiative, an advocacy committee comprised of 14 Houston-area organizations. The committee’s co-chair, Suzanne Jarvis, is an associate producer of the film.

There are 104 screenings scheduled across the country in conjunction with National Recovery Month. Angels in Motion officials will be available at the Sept. 19 screening for information and discussion. ••

Bowling event to aid autism

The third annual Bowling 4 iPads to benefit children with autism spectrum disorder will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Thunderbird Lanes, 3075 Holme Ave.

This fun event for the whole family will raise money to buy iPads that will be donated to Philadelphia schools that offer autism support programs.

The $30 ticket price includes three hours of bowling, shoe rental, food and music. There will be raffles and other activities. Alcoholic beverages will not be sold but adults are welcome to bring their own. For tickets, contact Sammy Sanchez at 215–421–7230 or coachsam15@msn.com. ••

John Birch Society to meet

The John Birch Society will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. at Holmesburg Recreation Center, Rhawn and Ditman streets.

There will be a DVD presentation on The Constitution is the Solution. Refreshments will be served.

The motto of the John Birch Society is “Less Government, More Responsibility and — With God’s Help — A Better World.” ••

Designer Bag Bingo is Sept. 25

St. Bernard Church will sponsor a Designer Bag Bingo on Sunday, Sept. 25, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Cannstatter’s, 9130 Academy Road.

The cost is $40, and includes buffet, beer, wine, soda and 10 games of bingo.

Flea market at HFU alumni weekend

Holy Family University’s alumni weekend flea market is set for Saturday, Sept. 17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The day’s activities will also include face-painting, children’s games, silent auction, food concession, raffle prizes and a 50/50. Vendor spaces are $15, or two for $25. Proceeds from the event will go to support Students At Your Service (S.A.Y.S.), a student-run organization that raises funds for community service projects. Local church to host craft show, car cruise

United Methodist Church of the Good Shepherd, 10901 Calera Road, will host a flea market/craft show/car cruise on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Taste of Bustleton and Beyond is Saturday

The Maternity BVM Alumnic Association will host its annual Taste of Bustleton and Beyond on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at its parish hall and courtyard, 9220 Old Bustleton Ave.

The evening will include a multi-course meal, DJ and gift basket raffle. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. All guests must be 21 or older. Proceeds help the children of needy families attend the school.

Children’s heart fundraiser at Marian Hall

The Keep the Beat fundraiser will take place on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 6 to 11 p.m. at St. Dominic’s Marian Hall, 8532 Frankford Ave.

Proceeds will benefit the Children’s Heart Foundation. Tickets cost $35 in advance and $40 at the door, with discounts for tables of five or 10.

The night will include a buffet dinner, desserts, beer, wine, juice, soft drinks, DJ, dancing, photo booth, door prizes, 50/50 and raffles. The first 100 people at the door will receive a swag bag.

Event for kids at Shaare Shamayim

On Sunday, Sept. 18, at 11 a.m., Congregations of Shaare Shamayim will present Mommy and Me with a Jewish Twist. Julie Hershkovitz will present an hour of songs and story time. The activity is recommended for children 1 to 3½ years old. The cost is $3 per child. For an additional $3 per child, a dairy lunch is available.

Writing contest open to high school students

The Northeast Philadelphia Hall of Fame is sponsoring a creative writing contest for high school students. Students are encouraged to submit a written poem, rap, song lyric or other creative writing piece of any length on the theme, “What Makes Northeast Philadelphia Special?” The piece must be in written form and non-narrative (not an essay or story). It can be any length, from a haiku to a long song or rap.

Entries should be in MS Word format and emailed to lrotoli@holyfamily.edu by 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 3.

The grand prize is a $2,000 scholarship to Holy Family and an iPad. Honorable mention prizes include gift certificates to local businesses for students. The teacher with the most students entering the contest will receive a gift certificate to the Dining Car.

The winning entry will be published in the Times and in the program booklet for the 2016 Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Oct. 16 at Holy Family. The winning student and his/her teacher will be recognized at the ceremony.

Caregiver seminar is open to the public

St. Hubert celebrates 75th anniversary

Students at St. Hubert High School gathered for Mass and a blessing last Thursday morning to celebrate the school’s 75th anniversary.

The school celebrated its first liturgy on Sept. 8, 1941. Mass was celebrated last week by Monsignor Phillip J. Cribben, a former Secretary for Catholic Education in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

Immediately following Mass, the students processed out the front doors for a blessing and to sing their Alma Mater. The theme for the anniversary year is “Bringing Forth Brilliance,” which celebrates the four facets — Sisterhood, Scholastics, Spirituality and Service — of the school’s history.

St. Hubert will celebrate its 75th anniversary with a gala at Vie, 600 N. Broad St., on Friday, Nov. 18, from 7 p.m. to midnight. Tickets cost $200 and include a cocktail reception, sit-down dinner, open bar, dessert buffet and live music. Sponsorships and program booklet advertising are available. Bariatric sessions available at Nazareth

Smoking cessation classes

Nazareth Hospital, 2601 Holme Ave., will offer a series of free smoking and tobacco cessation classes to individuals looking to quit smoking cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and/or smokeless tobacco use.

Sessions include understanding addiction, behavior change strategies, coping mechanisms for urges and stress, education on healthy lifestyle choices, access to resources for nicotine replacement therapy and relapse prevention.

The classes will take place on Wednesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m., from Sept. 14 to Oct. 26 in the seventh-floor rehab conference room.

Frankford HS announces reunion

The 1966 class of Frankford High School, the 100th graduating class, is planning a 50th-year reunion.

Boyle holding Senior Expo

State Rep. Kevin Boyle will be holding a Senior Lunch and Expo on Thursday, Sept, 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Villages of Pine Valley Club House, 8601 Pine Road.
