Volunteers clean up wooded area along Knights Road

A group of six volunteers made a big impact on litter in Poquessing Creek Park when they removed 11 trash bags full of assorted debris along with one bag of recyclable cans from a wooded area along Knights Road, just west of Frankford Avenue, on Oct. 8.

The Friends of Poquessing Watershed sponsored the event. Participants included Fred Maurer, Rich Glaser, Vladimir Erkalov, Jeanne Capone, Hans Brolinson and Nance Kerns.

Some of the unique items removed from the park included an illuminating fairy, an air conditioner cover, part of a metal patio table, a wooden picnic table and benches, carpeting, a bundle of rubber bands, two sneakers, a baseball bat, a golf ball, a football, a toy periscope, a Hummer matchbox car, a horse riding stirrup, a car bumper and bumper cover, political campaign signs, scrap aluminum, a Wawa sign and a lighting device with red, blue and green bulbs.

The next FOPW cleanup is planned for Saturday, Nov. 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the terminus of McNulty Road in the Byberry East Industrial Park. It’s just east of the Community College of Philadelphia campus. Volunteers are welcome. They should wear long pants and appropriate footwear. Organizers will provide cleaning supplies and refreshments. Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. ••
