Suspected gunman puts Far NE on lockdown

A suspected gunman held police and a Northeast Philadelphia neighborhood at bay for about three hours on Monday afternoon as he refused to exit his apartment upon command.

Officers from the 8th district were called to a building on the 3200 block of Red Lion Road at about 4:30 p.m. when a man who lives there reported that his neighbor pointed a gun at him. The suspect then went back to his own apartment and refused to come out when police showed up.

Police declared a barricade situation at 5:15 p.m. and set up a staging area for SWAT and other specialty units at Red Lion and Calera roads. According to news reports, shoppers at a nearby supermarket and strip mall were placed on lockdown as authorities secured the area. The suspect surrendered at about 7:30 p.m. Police did not disclose his identity. No injuries were reported. ••
