Breakfast, shredding at PPH

Cartoonist Tom Stiglich’s work on display
The Markeim Arts Center, located at 104 Lincoln Ave. (at Walnut Street) in Haddonfield, New Jersey, is exhibiting the work of Northeast Times and Creators Syndicate cartoonist Tom Stiglich, along with work by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Steve Breen and New York/New Jersey cartoonist Jimmy Margulies.
The exhibit is titled Merica. The show runs through Nov. 26. The opening reception is Saturday, Nov. 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. ••

Sports Hall of Fame ceremony on Thursday
The Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame will hold an induction ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 3, at the Hilton hotel, 4200 City Line Ave.
Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served at 6 p.m., with the ceremony starting at 7:30.
The inductees will be the 1966–67 76ers, Al Severance, Brian Dawkins, Bruce Harlan, Charlie Manuel, Chris Short, Dick “Hoops” Weiss, George Orton, Goose Goslin, Herman Taylor, Jeff Chandler, Jimmy Watson, Marilyn Stephens, Steve Fredericks, Sylvia Wene Martin and Vonnie Gros.
Also being honored will be Villanova’s NCAA-champion men’s basketball team and the Arena League-champion Philadelphia Soul. Phillies public address announcer Dan Baker will serve as master of ceremonies.

Register for lung cancer benefit
Free to Breathe, a national nonprofit lung cancer research and advocacy organization, will hold its 11th Annual Lung Cancer 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, Nov. 6.
The event will be held at Memorial Hall in Fairmount Park and include a welcome rally, kids dash and 5K run or walk that winds through Fairmount Park’s Horticultural Center, past the Japanese Teahouse and finishes in front of the Please Touch Museum.
The cost is $35, or $20 for kids 12 and under.
Participants can register as individuals or as a team. The top three individual fundraisers and top three fundraising teams will be recognized on event day, and awards will be presented to the top overall male and female race finishers in the 5K run.
The fee includes entry into the event, a 2016 Free to Breathe T-shirt, entertainment and refreshments. In addition to the walk, this year’s event will feature a silent auction, Survivor’s Tent, Team Spirit Award, kids’ activities and music by WMGK DJ Andre Gardner.
Registration, check-in and silent auction bidding begins at 7 a.m. The 5K run will start at 8:30, followed by the 5K walk and 1-mile walk, then the kids’ dash for ages 9 and under.

Recovery film to be screened Monday
There will be a screening of Generation Found, a film about a community in Houston coming together to ignite a youth addiction recovery revolution, on Monday, Nov. 7, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Philadelphia Mills theater.
Counselors, law school dropouts, aspiring rock musicians, retired football players, oil industry executives and church leaders came together to build the world’s largest peer-driven youth and family recovery community.
Independently filmed over the course of two years, Generation Found takes a look at how a system of treatment centers, sober high schools, alternative peer groups and collegiate recovery programs can exist in concert to intervene early and provide a real and tested long-term alternative to the war on drugs.

To assist people with the rising costs of home heating, the Pennsylvania Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is available to people of all ages who meet the income guidelines.

Winterization Day planned for Sunday
Rhawnhurst Naturally Occurring Retirement Community will hold its annual Winterization Day on Sunday, Nov. 6.
Volunteers will prepare local older adults’ homes for winter. Times slots are from 10 a.m. to noon, noon to 2 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m.
Volunteers will seal drafty windows and doors; replace smoke alarm batteries; replace hard-to-reach light bulbs; rake leaves; remove window air conditioners; and make minor home repairs.

Scholarship deadline on Nov. 15
The deadline is Nov. 15 for students in kindergarten through eighth grade to apply for Children’s Scholarship Fund Philadelphia.
All 2,000 available CSFP scholarships will be awarded through a random lottery, are need-based, and can be provided to a family as a whole for up to three children.

Walk seeks to end Alzheimer’s disease
The Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place on Saturday, Nov. 12, at Citizens Bank Park.
Check-in starts at 9 a.m., the Promise Garden Ceremony is at 10:45 a.m., and the walk kicks off at 11 a.m.
Proceeds will benefit Alzheimer’s research, and the Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter care and support programs and services it offers to the estimated 294,000 people in the region who are affected by Alzheimer’s or a related disorder.

The Glatz family had owned the store for more than 60 years.
