A 44-year-old SEPTA police officer is facing a long recovery from critical injuries he suffered when a hit-and-run driver struck him as he jogged along Rowland Avenue in Holmesburg on May 22.
Philadelphia police have released surveillance video of the suspect’s car, recorded as he fled the scene. The crash occurred at about 3 p.m. on the 7600 block of Rowland Ave. Transit Officer Gary Miller was jogging southbound when a southbound car struck him from behind. Miller collided with the windshield before falling to the street, police said. The car proceeded southbound on Rowland then eastbound on Oakmont Street.
Miller was taken to Aria Health’s Torresdale campus with injuries to his head, left leg and collarbone. He has undergone multiple surgeries and remains hospitalized, SEPTA Police Chief Thomas Nestel III has said.
Philadelphia police described the fleeing car as a late 1990s or early 2000s Saturn sedan, dark in color, with a rear spoiler and a missing hubcap on the front driver’s side wheel. The wheel may have been a doughnut spare. After the crash, it had a shattered windshield and front end damage. The driver was described as a white man, 20 to 30 years old with dark hair and a blue shirt. Call 215–686-TIPS or text to PPD TIP to report information.
Miller’s colleagues in the SEPTA police force have set up a page on the GoFundMe website, “Relief for Gary Miller,” to raise money to help him with his medical expenses. ••
