Philadelphia Water Department announces Northeast cleanups

The TTF Watershed Partnership and Philadelphia Water Department will clean up and mark storm drains around Rising Sun and Adams avenues on Saturday, June 4, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Volunteers should meet at 500 Adams Ave. (across from Planet Fitness). Recycling bins will be available. Email robin@ttfwatershed.org or call 215–744–1853.

Meanwhile, the Water Department will sponsor a June 7 cleanup of Frankford Creek, at Tacony Creek Park and Fishers Lane Bridge. Volunteers will be treated to ice cream and snacks, and prizes will be awarded.

Volunteers should meet at the intersection of I Street and Ramona Avenue at 5 p.m.

Neilson to hold SEPTA ID event

State Rep. Ed Neilson (D-174th dist.) will host an event for older Pennsylvanians and residents with disabilities to obtain their SEPTA Key photo ID cards from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 2, at his district office, 16 Old Ashton Road.

SEPTA Key is the modern fare payment and collection system being unveiled by the transit agency. It offers seniors an alternative to using their Pennsylvania driver’s licenses or state-issued ID cards.

The new Key cards will have contactless chips, so riders will only have to pass it across the face of the validator to pay for their ride.

While an appointment isn’t required to attend the event, interested attendees can call Neilson’s office to reserve their spot. For information, call 215–330–3714. ••

Motorcycle ride will benefit CTCA

The Renegade Pigs Motorcycle Club will conduct its ninth annual R.J. Mehring Memorial Ride on Saturday, June 4. The ride will begin in York and end at 12:30 p.m. at Cancer Treatment Centers of America, 1331 E. Wyoming Ave.

The club will present a donation to CTCA for its Assistance in Healthcare fund in memory of R.J. Mehring, who was treated at the hospital in 2007.

The Renegade Pigs membership is made up of law enforcement and fire service personnel who ride American-made motorcycles. The club has 45 active chapters in 17 states. ••

Mass for cops and firemen at St. Matt’s

St. Matthew Roman Catholic Church, at 3000 Cottman Ave. in Mayfair, will hold an Appreciation Mass to honor police officers and firefighters on Sunday, June 5, at 11:30 a.m. All are welcome. ••

Benefit adult soccer tourney in Parkwood

The third annual SHASTA (Supporting Heroes and Scholar-Athletes through Action) six-on-six adult soccer tournament will take place on Saturday, June 4, at Parkwood Youth Organization, 3301 Mechanicsville Road. The cost is $455 a team. The maximum roster is 13, and each team must have at least two females. All participants receive a game shirt and will play in at least three 30-minute games.

Proceeds benefit the Johnny Pawlowski Scholarship Fund, Father Judge Soccer Alumni, the Holy Family men’s and women’s soccer teams and Parkwood Youth Organization.

John Birch Society to meet on June 7

The John Birch Society will meet on Tuesday, June 7, at 7 p.m. at Holmesburg Recreation Center, Rhawn and Ditman streets.

There will be a PowerPoint presentation on treaties. The motto of the John Birch Society is “Less Government, More Responsibility and — With God’s Help — A Better World.” ••

St. Martha celebrating 50th anniversary

St. Martha Parish, 11301 Academy Road, will be celebrating its 50th jubilee in 2016 with a closing liturgy on Sunday, June 5, at noon.

Archbishop Charles Chaput will be the celebrant.

Church will give food to needy on Saturday

Bethany A.M.E. Church, 8898 Ashton Road, will be giving away free food to the needy on Saturday, June 4, from 10 a.m. to noon.

The food bank is part of the 200-year-old church’s Feeding Ministry, under the supervision of the Rev. Lois M. Wilkinson.

Mural tours announced

The City of Philadelphia’s Mural Arts Program has announced its 2016 tour schedule and spring series of public events, offering art lovers, families and tourists the opportunity to experience the world’s largest outdoor art gallery, showcasing work that exemplifies Mural Arts’ mission that “art ignites change.”

There are new tour routes and tours for 2016, as well as many special events scheduled between now and June 14. In addition, ticketed monthly For the Love of Mosaics tours will be held every third Saturday of the month through November in partnership with Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens.

Mural Arts tours are led by professionally trained guides and provide an insider’s view of some of the nearly 4,000 public art installations in the city, as well as the artistic processes and colorful community histories that embody each project. Most tours depart from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts’ Hamilton Building, 128 N. Broad St.

Party with the Bambies

The St. Hubert Alumnae Association will sponsor “Bambies by the River” on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Maggie’s Waterfront Cafe, 9242 N. Delaware Ave.

Tickets are $35 per person and includes food, draft beer, wine, drink specials and a DJ. The event is open to all graduates and friends of the school 21 or older.

Charities Night with the Phillies

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s Catholic Charities Appeal is partnering with the Philadelphia Phillies for Catholic Charities Night at Citizens Bank Park on Thursday, June 16.

A portion of the proceeds from all tickets purchased through a dedicated website link will benefit the appeal directly. Catholic Charities provides food, clothing, shelter and education to people in need. The organization also supports nearly 180 ministries and programs involving child care, retirement living, homelessness and growing the church on college campuses.

Tickets must be purchased via www.phillies.com/catholiccharitiesnight to benefit the cause. Tickets range from $20 to $38 depending on the section. ••

Chamber to host speaker series

The Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce’s next Speaker Series event will be “Philadelphia … at Your Service” on Wednesday, June 15, and feature the city’s managing director, Licenses and Inspection commissioner, Commerce Department senior director and Community Life Improvement Program director, all available to answer questions from attendees.

Abraham Lincoln sports reunion to be held Sept. 11

An Abraham Lincoln High School all-sports reunion will take place on Sunday, Sept. 11, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Bensalem Country Club.

Any person who played varsity or JV. sports at Lincoln in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s is invited to come.

There will be door prizes, a 50/50, awards and honors for championship teams.

Sahara Sam’s hosting ecial-needs community

The nonprofit Sambulance, which fosters safety education within the special-needs community, is partnering with Sahara Sam’s Oasis Indoor and Outdoor Water Park for a gala on Saturday night, June 4, from 7 to 11 p.m.

Sahara Sam’s is located at 160 Cooper Road in West Berlin, New Jersey.

The evening will include live music, a seafood buffet, an auction and access to the water park.

Annie Peters, executive director of Sambulance, said the fundraiser will allow her organization to continue to offer free programming.

“Partnering with Annie and the Sambulance to host this event is exciting for us,” said Ilya Girlya, CEO of Sahara Sam’s.

Wizard World here Thursday through Sunday

Wizard World will be at the Pennsylvania Convention Center June 2–5.

The collection of stars will include Marvel franchise headliners Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie and Back to the Future stars Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd and Lea Thompson, David Duchovny (The X-Files) and Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead).

MMA fighter at Wizard World

Mixed martial arts fighter Georges St-Pierre will attend Wizard World Philadelphia on Sunday, June 5, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

The three-time former UFC welterweight champion will greet fans, sign autographs and pose for photo ops.

St-Pierre, 34, is the author of the New York Times bestseller The Way of the Fight. He appeared in the 2014 movie Captain America: Winter Soldier.

St-Pierre joins a lineup of entertainers scheduled to attend the pop culture event, including Marvel movie stars Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston; David Duchovny (The X-Files); the Back to the Future trio of Michael J. As part of its ongoing redevelopment, Philadelphia Mills announced the opening of three new dining options within the South Food Court.

The additions include Japanese eatery Suki Hana, Charley’s Philly Steaks and Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen.

Workshops at St. Anne

St. Anne Senior Center, 2607 E. Cumberland St., is offering two workshops for people 50 or older.

The Clay Creations class meets weekly on Friday afternoons from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Creating with the Color Wheel meets on Tuesday afternoons from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Registration and material fees will be charged for these workshops.

The center also offers the following exercise classes: Chair Yoga on Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m.; Tai Chi on Wednesdays at 10 a.m.; and Enhance Fitness on Thursdays and Fridays at 9:30 a.m.

Northeast firehouses get new leadership

The Philadelphia Fire Department has assigned four new chiefs to the two Far Northeast firehouses.

Battalion Chiefs Charles Klink and Stephen Jenkins were assigned to Battalion 12, which is located with Engine 71 at Cottman and Loretto avenues.

Battalion Chiefs Vincent Mulray and Carl Broll are serving at Battalion 13, which is housed with Engine 46 at Frankford and Linden avenues.

All four chiefs are Northeast residents and will bring a total of 137 years of firefighting experience with them. ••

Weight-loss group has openings

The Trevose Behavior Modification Program, a weight-loss group, is accepting applications for a new group starting in the spring.

Previous members who have been out of the program for five or more years may also apply.
