An argument between a father and his adult son led to a shooting on a Mayfair street on April 26, leaving the son with a chest wound and the father explaining his actions to police.
Authorities opted not to charge the 66-year-old father, who was licensed to carry the handgun involved in the incident.
The altercation began at about 1 p.m. on the 3200 block of Princeton Ave. inside the father’s vehicle, a 2012 Toyota Tacoma. The father was attempting to take the son, 38, to a doctor’s appointment, police said. But the son refused to go to the doctor or to return home.
As the two continued discussing the situation, the son allegedly tried to grab the father’s gun from the center console. He then grabbed the father’s keys and tossed them into the street, police said. The father retrieved the gun, stepped outside the vehicle and tried to call police. But the son approached the father and struck him in the head, police said. The father pushed the son and shot him once in the chest.
Witnesses called 911. Police took the son to Aria Health’s Torresdale campus, where he was admitted in stable condition. Police recovered the gun, which is registered to the father. The District Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and did not press criminal charges. ••
