LOVE Your Park at local tree planting event
A tree planting and speaking program at Pleasant Hill Park on Saturday, May 7, will kick off the fifth annual LOVE Your Park Week. May 7 will be a citywide day of service hosted by more than 80 neighborhood-based park friends groups featuring cleaning and greening. City officials will join volunteers and the community at Pleasant Hill Park, Linden and Delaware avenues, in East Torresdale starting at 11:30 a.m. The rest of the week will feature car shows, festivals and fairs, bird walks, bicycle rides, Mother’s Day celebrations, Quizzo games, art exhibits, history tours, picnics, nature walks, plant sales and more activities. ••

The application period for citizens wishing to serve on Philadelphia’s Parks and Recreation Commission will continue through May 6. The current appointee’s terms will expire this year. City Council must develop a list of nominees from which the mayor must choose new appointees.

Family circus coming to St. Martha Parish

Free birding program in Tacony Creek Park
Birding will be the topic of the next Nature’s Hidden Surprises program in Tacony Creek Park on May 11.

Construction to start in Lawncrest next week
Construction is scheduled to start on May 9 on a four-month, $2.8 million project to rehabilitate the structurally deficient Adams Avenue bridge over Tacony Creek in the Lawncrest section of Philadelphia, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
A contractor will repair and strengthen the stone masonry arch structure by resetting and repointing stones on the three-span bridge, including the stones protruding on top of the sidewall.
The plan also includes removing the earthen fill inside the structure and replacing it with lightweight concrete; rebuilding the existing wing walls that extend from the support abutments; widening the right turn lane onto Crescentville Road; and installing scour protection around the support abutments and piers.
Adams Avenue will be closed and detoured between Newtown Avenue and Crescentville Road during construction. Through traffic will be detoured over Rising Sun Avenue, Olney Avenue, North Front Street and East Godfrey Avenue.
The bridge was built in 1901 and carries about 16,000 vehicles a day. The structure is 71 feet long and 26 feet wide. Loftus Construction of Cinnaminson is the general contractor. The cost is funded fully by the state. The bridge is scheduled to reopen by Sept. 2. ••
East Torresdale Civic to discuss Glen Foerd fence proposal
The East Torresdale Civic Association will host a community meeting on Monday, May 9, when neighbors will discuss a proposal by the Glen Foerd Conservation Corporation to erect a fence on the perimeter of the riverfront estate.
During the ETCA’s March meeting, Glen Foerd Director Meg Sharp said that a fence is needed to protect the city-owned property from nighttime trespassers and vandals. Since then, some neighbors of the site at 5001 Grant Ave. have circulated a petition in opposition to a fence.
The civic group is also expected to discuss the community’s role on the Glen Foerd board and in helping to direct its agenda.
