Alleged armed robbers arrested

Two patrol cops from the 2nd Police District chased down and arrested two alleged armed robbers in a Castor Gardens alleyway on May 11.

The arrests occurred minutes after the suspects had held up two men, ages 59 and 42, in separate incidents nearby, said Capt. Thomas McLean, commander of the 2nd district.

At about 10:45 p.m., the elder victim reported that two men approached him from behind on the 2000 block of Knorr St., pointed a gun at him and threw him against a car before stealing his wallet, which contained $20.

A short time later and about five blocks away on the 1600 block of Magee Ave., two men, one with a gun, approached the younger victim and demanded his money. When the victim screamed for help, the robbers pushed him to the ground and stood over him with the gun pointed at him.

Officers Thomas Farrell and Chris Simone were patrolling nearby in uniform and a marked police car. They ran into an alley and captured the suspects with the help of 15th district officers, as well as the spotlight from an Aviation Unit helicopter. Police found a BB gun on the suspects that had been altered to look like a pistol.

Jovan Cannon, 21, of the 6700 block of Akron St.; and Khalif Scott, 20, of the 2900 block of W. Gordan St., were each charged with robbery and related crimes. ••
