Either way, it looks like all athletes in the Philadelphia Catholic League will get a chance to play this year.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia recently reversed its decision regarding fall sports. In late August, it decided to forgo playing sports until 2021, but last month reversed that decision and said schools would play.

Now, some will, some won’t, and man, can it get confusing.

Let’s start with football.

Beginning later this month, all Catholic schools with the exception of Father Judge High School and West Catholic will play football games. The Crusaders and Burrs will instead play a season in the spring. They won’t be alone, with the Public League and a few Philly suburban schools doing the same.

In boys soccer, every school other than Judge and Neumann-Goretti will compete in the fall.

Most schools, including Archbishop Ryan and St. Hubert, will play girls soccer in the fall. Little Flower has opted to play its girls soccer season during the spring.

In field hockey, it’s the same, with Ryan and Hubert playing in the fall, and Little Flower waiting until the spring.

Boys and girls cross country teams will be a full go this fall, as will all the schools that have girls tennis and volleyball.

All golf teams will compete in the spring.

All of the schools that have opted to postpone seasons until the end of the school year are located within city limits, and with the strict social distancing rules Philadelphia has put on gatherings, it would be challenging to practice every day.
