Police have captured two Kensington men and a 17-year-old boy in connection with the theft of about two dozen work trucks and other vehicles in the Northeast and elsewhere since late January.

Officers in the 24th district arrested the suspects following a Feb. 23 car stop in which Matthew Smith, 26, and the 17-year-old were riding in a Ford Taurus that had been reported stolen from the 3000 block of Ruth St. earlier that day. The teenager was driving and Smith a passenger, police said.

On Feb. 24, police searched Smith’s home on the 3100 block of Aramingo Ave. as well as the home of a suspected accomplice, Kyle Pritt, 19, of the 1900 block of E. Somerset St. Inside the homes, police allegedly found stolen tools as well as clothing linking the suspects to various vehicle thefts.

Smith was charged with 23 thefts between Jan. 27 and Feb. 10, while Pritt was charged with six thefts on Jan. 27. Most of the stolen vehicles were Ford F-series pickup trucks and Econoline work vans. Police did not release a full list of theft locations, but a partial list includes 2300 Castor Ave. on Jan. 27, 4200 Woodhaven Road on Jan. 28, 2300 Tremont St. on Feb. 2, 600 Benner St. on Feb. 3, 9400 Lansford St. on Feb. 4. and 1400 Comly St. on Feb. 20. ••
