Republic Bank donates to local school

Republic Bank recently donated $7,500 to Frankford Friends School to be used for financial aid for low-income students. The donation, made under Pennsylvania’s Education Improvement Tax Credit program, was accepted by Kathryn Park Cook, head of school.

“We are so appreciative of Republic Bank’s generous support of our financial aid program,” she said. “With the lowest tuition of any Quaker school in the region, Frankford Friends strives to enroll a very diverse student population, from families of many different backgrounds. Republic Bank’s support makes a huge difference in our ability to help those who cannot afford the entire tuition.”

Frankford Friends School, operating at its location on Orthodox Street since 1833, enrolls students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. ••

Northeast students honored by CCP

Community College of Philadelphia students and Northeast Philadelphia residents Elizabeth Scicchitano and Saul Jasso have been named to the 2016 All-Pennsylvania Academic Team, an honor that recognizes students from Pennsylvania’s 14 community colleges for their scholarly achievements and community involvement.

Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and the Pennsylvania Commission for Community Colleges paid tribute to the scholars on April 4 in Harrisburg.

Scicchitano, 32, is the mother of an 8-year-old daughter. She returned to college to become part of the cure for breast cancer. Her mother suffers from late-stage breast cancer, a disease that also beset her grandmother and aunt. Scicchitano is pursuing a career as an oncologist and has a 3.74 grade point average. She graduated in May with an associate’s degree in science.

Jasso, 32, is a first-generation college student who enrolled in CCP after working a string of dead-end jobs and realizing his professional future looked bleak without a college degree. He has a 4.0 average and works in his father’s landscaping business to help pay tuition. He hopes to become a network security specialist. ••
