15th PDAC honors Officers of the Month

Two guys were really going at it at Torresdale and Hellerman early on Sept. 7, Officer Arthur Green said last week. Turns out they weren’t just fighting; one guy was trying to rob the other.

Green said that when he pulled up, one man took off. The victim told the officer the man had been trying to rob him, so Green gave chase. The robber went down streets and alleys with Green radioing in information as he pursued. Green lost the suspect, but Officer Jill Gargel took up the chase and caught the robber hiding in a home and took him into custody.

That arrest led to some kudos for the cops, and the 15th Police District Advisory Council named them their September Officers of the Month at their Oct. 27 meeting in the Mayfair Community Center.

Treasurer Pete Specos said the PDAC is continuing efforts to conduct a gun buyback program. The usual routine at such events is to give anyone who brings in a gun a $50 gift certificate, so the PDAC is looking for a sponsor. He said previous buybacks have brought in 50 guns a year.

The following neighborhood events are scheduled:

• St. Mark’s Church, 4442 Frankford Ave., will host Thanksgiving dinner for the needy at noon on Nov. 27. The church will host a Christmas dinner for the homeless at noon on Dec. 20.

• There will be a Christmas dinner for officers of the 2nd and 15th police districts and Northeast Detectives at their headquarters, Harbison and Levick, on Dec. 13.

The Police District Advisory Council meetings held on the last Monday of each month at the Mayfair Community Center are not open to the general public. Members of other area organizations like Town Watches or civic associations send representatives to the PDAC’s monthly meetings to report area crime problems to police. The next two meetings will be Nov. 24 and Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. ••
