St. Martha Parish celebrating 50th

St. Martha Parish will be celebrating its 50th jubilee in 2016 with the following special liturgical and social events:

• Jan. 10th, liturgy for those baptized at St. Martha.

• Feb. 13, liturgy and blessing for those married at St. Martha.

• April 2, auction.

• April 10, communion breakfast and Hall of Fame induction of new class.

• April 17, anointing of sick liturgy.

• June 5, closing liturgy, with Archbishop Charles Chaput as celebrant, followed by celebration at The Philadelphia Ballroom. ••

Nominations open for Sports Hall of Fame

The Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame invites the public to participate in the nomination of individuals to comprise its 13th class of inductees.

The public nomination process for the 2016 class concludes on Friday, Jan. 8.

Submissions are accepted at nominations@phillyhall.net or Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame, 410 Waverly Road, Wyncote, PA 19095.

All nominations must include the nominee’s accomplishments and/or contributions, along with the submitter’s contact information.

Prior to submitting, check the current roster of inductees at www.phillyhall.org/inductees.asp

The Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame is open to athletes, coaches, media, administrators and other contributors in all areas of professional, college, amateur, high school and youth sports.

Candidates must have been born in or performed in the Philadelphia area.••

Three upcoming concerts announced

Music at Monica’s, the concert series of the Church of Saint Monica in Berwyn, is hosting its 11th season of musical offerings.

David Kim, the concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra, returns to the series for the fourth time in a virtuoso solo violin performance on Jan. 17.

On Feb. 28, Steinway artist Meral Guneyman returns for a solo piano concert, a portion of which will feature the virtuosic jazz arrangements of Dick Hyman.

To close the season, the Pennsylvania Girlchoir will make its debut performance at Saint Monica on April 17. All shows are at 3 p.m.

All Music at Monica’s concert events are free, and tickets are not required. All concerts are held in the Church at 63 Main Ave., Berwyn. A free-will offering is accepted to support the series. ••

Free fall prevention program now available

People 50 years and older are invited to attend a free “Healthy Steps” falls prevention program to be held at KleinLife, 10100 Jamison Ave., on Wednesdays, Jan. 20 and 27, from 10:30 a.m to 1:30 p.m.

Lunch will be included.

Andre Krug, president and CEO of KleinLife, said, “The Healthy Steps program’s ultimate goal is to keep older adults on their feet, thereby avoiding falls leading to serious injuries and hospitalizations.”

There will be a brief follow-up session on March 2.

The first program will include information on preventing falls, healthy eating, a home safety demonstration, medicine safety and talking to physicians.

The second program will feature a variety of subjects, including a physical skills screening, warmups, strength and energy, stretching, getting started with regular exercise, foot care and footwear, balance basics, upper-body strength and weights.

A colorful 68-page guide with information and useful resources also will be included.

Holmesburg history program

Holmesburg Library, 7810 Frankford Ave. (at Hartel Avenue), will host History of the Holmesburg Neighborhood on Wednesday, Jan. 20, from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Thrift store needs volunteers

The Holy Redeemer Thrift Store, located in the Town & Country Shopping Centre, 473 East County Line Road in Hatboro, is in need of volunteers.

All proceeds from the Holy Redeemer Thrift Store benefit the Women’s and Children’s Services, which provides funding to the Holy Redeemer Maternity Center and the Drueding Center.

The thrift store also offers specials, including 25 percent off purchases for seniors and military personnel on Mondays, and 25 percent off purchases every Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m.

College scholarships available

City Councilman Brian O’Neill (R-10th dist.) announced that the City of Philadelphia will sponsor 50 college scholarships for graduating high school seniors. Scholarship awards are $1,000 for each academic year for four consecutive years of full-time enrollment in participating accredited four-year bachelor degree programs. The deadline for applications is Feb. 19.
