Charter school sets meeting schedule

Northwood Academy Charter School, 4621 Castor Ave., has set its board meeting schedule for the 2015–16 academic year.

The meetings will take place on Jan. 19, Feb. 16, March 21, April 18, May 16 and June 20.

Meetings will take place at 5 p.m. at the school. ••

SEPTA construction in Frankford

SEPTA will restrict northbound Frankford Avenue between Meadows Street and Harrison Street in Frankford through Jan. 15, 8 p.m. to 4 a.m., for construction at the Frankford Transportation Center. SEPTA will complete the work under a PennDOT Highway Occupancy Permit.

Recycling event at Lincoln HS

Friends of Pennypack Park will hold its monthly recycling at the Abraham Lincoln High School parking lot, at 3201 Ryan Ave., on Saturday, Jan. 16, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Individuals are welcome to bring paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, copper, clothing, shoes, printer cartridges, cell phones, books and magazines. The event will take place rain or shine. For more information, call 215–934–7275 or visit www.friendsofpennypackpark.org ••

Flea market at St. Hubert

St. Hubert High School, Torresdale and Cottman avenues, will hold its ninth annual indoor flea market on Saturday, Jan. 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m..

The event will feature more than 70 vendors. A precious metal buyer will also be on site to buy unwanted gold and silver. All proceeds from the market will support the Faculty Scholarship Fund for students in need. ••

History program at Holmesburg Library

Holmesburg Library, 7810 Frankford Ave., will host History of the Holmesburg Neighborhood on Jan. 20, from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

The program will be led by Fred Moore, a member of the Friends of Northeast Philadelphia History. It is designed for adults, but all are welcome. For information, call 215–685–8756. ••

Tobacco cessation classes open to public

Nazareth Hospital, 2601 Holme Ave., will host free tobacco cessation classes on Thursdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. from Jan. 21 through Feb. 25.

“We are thrilled to bring these free classes to our community, and support our neighbors in their battle to stop addiction,” said Nancy Cherone, Nazareth’s executive director. “Education and commitment is key to living healthier.”

Certified tobacco addiction specialists at Nazareth will coach attendees on how to quit smoking. They will also provide information about tobacco addiction, new coping strategies and tips to prevent relapse. Attendees will receive free nicotine replacement products. Classes will be held in Nazareth’s first floor cancer center conference room. To register, call 215–335–7727. ••

Fall prevention program at KleinLife

People 50 years and older are invited to attend a free “Healthy Steps” falls prevention program to be held at KleinLife, 10100 Jamison Ave., on Wednesdays, Jan. 20 and 27, from 10:30 a.m to 1:30 p.m. Lunch will be included.

Andre Krug, president and CEO of KleinLife, said, “The Healthy Steps program’s ultimate goal is to keep older adults on their feet, thereby avoiding falls leading to serious injuries and hospitalizations.”

There will be a brief follow-up session on March 2.

The first program will include information on preventing falls, healthy eating, a home safety demonstration, medicine safety and talking to physicians. The second program will feature a variety of subjects, including a physical skills screening, strength and energy, getting started with regular exercise, foot care, balance basics, upper-body strength and weights. A 68-page guide with information and useful resources also will be included.

College scholarships available

City Councilman Brian O’Neill (R-10th dist.) announced that the City of Philadelphia will sponsor 50 college scholarships for graduating high school seniors. Scholarship awards are $1,000 for each academic year for four consecutive years of full-time enrollment in participating accredited four-year bachelor degree programs. The deadline for applications is Feb. 19.

Spiritual center to offer MLK program

Cranaleith Spiritual Center at 13475 Proctor Road will offer a one-day workshop “Conversations that Matter: Fear of the Other and the Imagination of Hope” on Friday, Jan. 15, in commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

As the nation approaches King’s national holiday on Monday, Jan. 18, the workshop will reflect on the past year’s many signs of growing discord across the nation and around the world.

The workshop will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and feature a day of inspiration and stimulation focusing not on ideas, but experience; not on fixing one another, but opening our hearts to how we might be instrumental in fostering deep and satisfying relationships and connections.

Two presenters will speak on the topic of racism from their perspectives. They are Ed McCool, former attorney for the Navajo Nation, and the Rev. J. Anyabwile Bankole, pastor of Greater Mount Vernon Baptist Church. Rick McKnight, Ph.D., will be the facilitator.
