L&I shuts down Bustleton nightclub

A Bustleton nightclub where a shootout occurred and three police officers were assaulted late last month is in hot water with Philadelphia’s Department of Licenses and Inspection.

L&I shut down the Goodlife Lounge, at 9859 Bustleton Ave., on Feb. 2, alleging that it does not have a “special assembly” permit to host live music and dancing. Also, inspectors found fire code violations in the building, according to a cease and desist order posted on the front door.

Yesterday, an L&I spokeswoman told the Northeast Times that inspectors returned to the site on Monday and saw that the proprietors had begun to address fire code violations, none of which should require major construction to rectify. The business also indicated it would apply for a special assembly license and, if granted, could be back in operation within days, the spokeswoman said.

Neighbors have complained for years about rowdiness involving patrons of the location, which has been the site of a series of nightclubs. In July 2013, after an altercation inside the club, a woman drove an SUV into a crowd of people outside, injuring eight people, including two critically.

On Jan. 31, shortly before 3 a.m., gunshots were reported outside the nightclub. Police from two area districts rushed to the scene, where they found 11 spent shell casings. About 50 people were congregated in the parking lot, with about half of them engaged in altercations, police said. When officers tried to break up the melee, three allegedly were assaulted by civilians. Police arrested three people. ••
