Burholme civic group to meet on Thursday

The Burholme Community Town Watch and Civic Association will meet on Thursday at 7 p.m. at United Methodist Church of the Redeemer, at Cottman and Lawndale avenues.

At last month’s meeting, the group heard from Sgt. Matthew Lowe and community relations officer Mark Mroz, of the 2nd Police District; Vicki Riley, of the city Department of Revenue; Mary Bell, of Catholic Community Services; and state Rep. Mark Cohen.

Bell explained that all of her agency’s services are free. Among the services is a parent cafe, which takes place every third Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. at Lawncrest Recreation Center, at Rising Sun Avenue and Comly Street. Childcare is provided. Call 215–687–2773 for information on Catholic Community Services.

Cohen explained that he would like to bring state offices to the building at 6901 Rising Sun Ave. that houses Gibbons Police Athletic League. The owner, Trinity Church Oxford, wants to lease the property to the Royal Farms convenience store company. Cohen hopes to keep the PAL open if the state leases a portion of the building.

Meanwhile, Cohen blamed Republicans for the ongoing state budget stalemate.

“Republicans don’t believe in taxing anybody,” he said.

The monthly business spotlight was on Goodman Family Chiropractic, 7256 Rising Sun Ave. Owner David Goodman explained that the business opened in 2001. Massage therapists are on site. Medicare and most major insurances are accepted. Goodman Family Chiropractic is involved in Burholme Business Association activities, including the annual fall festival. ••
