8th Police District to host flea market

The 8th Police District Advisory Council is planning a flea market and vendor fair to raise money for future community programs in the district. The event will be held Sept. 10 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside the 8th district station at 3100 Red Lion Road.

Dozens of vendors will be set up with a variety of merchandise, including crafts and second-hand items. The PDAC will be selling blue porch light bulbs so that residents can show their support for police. There will be food and drinks available and a 50/50 raffle. ••

Annual cookout in Burholme Park

The Jewish Community of Rhawnhurst will hold its annual barbecue/picnic on Sunday, Sept. 4, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Burholme Park, at Cottman and Central avenues. The public is invited.

Free haircuts available at Mayfair shop

Creations Unisex Hair Salon, 6632 Frankford Ave., will host “Be Cool For School” on Sunday, Sept. 4, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Open house at Orleans Technical College

JEVS Project WOW (World of Work) will hold an open house on Tuesdays, Sept. 6 and 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Orleans Technical College, 2770 Red Lion Road. Enrollment for the free career training class is ongoing. The class starts on Oct. 24.

The 24-week program is for low-income high school dropouts, ages 18–24, residing in Philadelphia.

Project WOW students gain hands-on training in weatherization and property maintenance/repair, such as basic skills in carpentry, plumbing and electrical.

Project WOW also includes GED test preparation; professional development throughout the program for students to work on developing a résumé and interviewing skills; and in-house job search assistance with a JEVS employment specialist.

Philadelphia Fire Department now hiring

The deadline is Sept. 2 to complete an online application for the Philadelphia Fire Department.

The starting salary ranges from $47,920 to $66,554.

Maaco of Mayfair Auto Show is Sept. 11

The fourth annual Maaco of Mayfair Auto Show hosted by the Latin Cruisers Car Club will be on Sunday, Sept. 11, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at 7673 Frankford Ave. Registration is open until 11 a.m. Several blocks of Frankford Avenue will be closed for the event.

Stock cars, modifieds, rat rods, race cars, customs, imports, antiques, special interest cars and new generation cars will be featured in the event, which is free to attend as a spectator.

Free concert in Tacony is Sept. 8

Tacony will host a free concert on Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. at Lardner’s Point Park, Levick Street and the Delaware River. There will be performances by Sean K. Preston and The Loaded Pistols. ••

Car Show is Oct. 1

The Double Eagle Car Show, hosted by Valley of Philadelphia Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, will be held Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cannstatter Volksfest Verein, 9130 Academy Road. The rain date is Oct. 8.

Comedy night at AOH

A comedy show to benefit the North Catholic Alumni Association will take place on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. at Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 39, 7229 Tulip St.

Education initiative outlined, explained on new website

The Mayor’s Office of Education has launched a new website offering vital information about the administration’s education initiatives: expanding quality pre-K, creating community schools and promoting career and technical education opportunities.

The site, phila.gov/education, was developed by the Office of Open Data and Digital Transformation and also has information about KEYSPOTS free computer access, college prep, adult education and the Read by 4th literacy initiative.

The site has links for people interested in receiving newsletters, enrollment information and partnership opportunities. There are links to topical blog posts and press releases, as well as a calendar of events such as Twitter chats and community roundtable discussions. ••
