Guard guilty of bringing drugs into prison

A former officer of the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility pleaded guilty on March 24 to federal charges that he smuggled prescription pills into the Northeast prison for delivery to an inmate.

Dupree Myers, 27, is the latest in a string of former city correctional officers implicated for dealing in drugs or other contraband inside the workplace. Myers pleaded guilty to attempted extortion and attempted distribution of controlled substances. The U.S. Attorney’s Office stated that Myers agreed to deliver OxyContin pills and a cellphone to a prisoner in exchange for $1,000.

Myers faces up to 40 years in federal prison. U.S. District Judge Wendy Beetlestone is scheduled to sentence him on June 23.

Myers’ admission follows the March 14 sentencing of former Corrections Officer Joseph Romano, 31, to 30 months in federal prison on similar charges. Romano also agreed to deliver OxyContin pills to an inmate at the Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center in exchange for $1,000.

On Feb. 11, former Corrections Officer George Kindle, 29, was sentenced to 48 months in federal prison for delivering a cellphone and 100 pills that he said were OxyContins to a House of Corrections inmate in exchange for $1,000.

As previously reported in the Northeast Times, former Corrections Officer John Wesley Herder, 49, pleaded guilty on Jan. 20 to attempted extortion, attempted distribution of controlled substances and making false statements to investigators after he allegedly agreed to deliver pills and a cellphone to a CFCF inmate in exchange for $1,000. ••
