Science festival starts this weekend
The Philadelphia Science Festival will return from April 22 to 30 with a new location for the festival-ending carnival, the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing. The entire festival will feature more than 70 events over nine days presented by more than 200 partners from across the region.
The purpose of the festival is to illuminate the essential role that science and technology play in the modern world. In previous years, the concluding carnival attracted some 30,000 visitors to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. This year’ carnival will happen on April 30 at Penn’s Landing, offering family-friendly activities, hands-on experiments, live performances, educator opportunities and explosive visuals from about 150 exhibitors.
Partners include Dow, the Philadelphia Zoo, Rowan University, The Franklin Institute, PECO and Penn Vet. ••
Soul fundraiser will aid Police Survivors Fund
The Philadelphia BlueFlame police and fire football club invites football fans to join the team for a special fundraiser at the Philadelphia Soul game on Saturday, April 23, at the Wells Fargo Center. Proceeds from the sale of each ticket will benefit to the Philadelphia Police Survivors Fund.
The Soul, who are 2–1 in the new season, will host the Cleveland Gladiators at 4 p.m. Afterwards, fans will get to see an exhibition game between Philadelphia police and firefighters.
Tickets to the event cost $30 and must be purchased through the BlueFlame. Tickets include beverages and hot dogs at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 before the game and bus transportation to and from the game. The bus leaves from the FOP, 11630 Caroline Road, at 2:30 p.m. Kids are welcome on the Wells Fargo Center field during warm-ups if their tickets are purchased from the BlueFlame.

CORA family festival to be held in Fox Chase
CORA Services, 8540 Verree Road in Fox Chase, will hold a family festival on Saturday, April 23, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be inflatables, games and music, along with food and activities for a nominal fee.

Art reception to be held at Glen Foerd
An opening reception for artist Lewis Colburn’s latest installation, Scenes for Empty Rooms, will be held at Glen Foerd on the Delaware, 5001 Grant Ave., on Sunday, April 24, from 3 to 5 p.m..
Colburn’s installation includes four works featured throughout the historic mansion. The reception is open to the public and does not require advance reservations.
Over the course of several months, Colburn researched the history of the estate, as well as the ways the mansion has been renovated, restored and preserved since its construction in the 1850s. The artist also used 3-D scanning technology to capture the mansion’s architectural details.

5K race will benefit organization that helps the homeless
Abington Friends School, 575 Washington Lane in Jenkintown, will host a 5K race on Saturday, April 23.
The race, which is open to the public, will begin at 9:30 a.m. near the AFS varsity softball field. It will take runners onto the Abington Art Center property and Alverthorpe Park before they return to where they started. Overall and age-group winners will receive prizes.
The race will benefit the Philadelphia chapter of Back on My Feet, a nonprofit that combats homelessness through the power of running and community services, and the Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership.
