Ready to run: There will be about 30,000 participants in this year’s Susan G. Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure, slated for this Sunday, Mother’s Day, at Eakins Oval/the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
The 25th Susan G. Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure will take place on Sunday, Mother’s Day at Eakins Oval/the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
“I truly believe finishing the fight can become a reality… and not just ‘some day’ but quite possibly by the time our grandchildren are adults,” said Elaine I. Grobman, CEO of Komen Philadelphia and founder of the first Race for the Cure in Philadelphia.
Over the past 25 years, the Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure has raised money to fund 155,000 mammograms, distribute over $55.5 million in grants for local breast cancer programs and contribute about $21.5 million to research.
Since being founded in 1991, the race has helped establish Komen Philadelphia as a leader in the breast cancer movement within a service area that includes the state of Delaware, Camden County in New Jersey and 11 counties in Pennsylvania.
Up to 75 percent of net proceeds generated by Komen Philadelphia stays in its 15-county service area. The remaining goes to the national Komen Grants Program for research initiatives. On Sunday, there will be about 30,000 participants, nearly 1,000 teams and a total overall attendance of 100,000.
