Autism Project funds Northeast programs

Sensory Story Time at Torresdale Library and an African and Caribbean Autism Awareness Program in the Northeast are among a dozen projects throughout the city that received seed money funding from the Philadelphia Autism Project in partnership with Drexel University’s ASERT Collaborative.

City Councilman Dennis O’Brien joined ASERT Collaborative officials in announcing the awardees last Thursday at Drexel’s Paul Peck Alumni Center.

The Philadelphia Autism Project issued its final report in January and prioritized support for “underserved and underrepresented populations living with autism.” Funding recipients included faith-based organizations and grassroots groups that work creatively and innovatively to connect with African-American, Latino, African, Caribbean, Asian and deaf communities throughout the city.

The project also chose to support organizations that are utilized by the larger community, like libraries, museums and theaters, that can become welcoming and inclusive spaces for people living with autism and their families. ••
