Oldtimers organizer Check Newns dies at 82

Newns died on July 3. He was 82.

Viewings are scheduled for Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Burns Funeral Home, 9708 Frankford Ave.

Newns is survived by his wife Phyllis; stepchildren of Tricia McGovern (Keith) and Fred Radtke (Shannon); step-grandchildren Keith, Hayden and Emma; and his brother, Jack.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his memory to Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy, 8085 Saltsburg Road, Suite 201, Pittsburgh, PA 15239, Attn: Mark Campbell, CFO UMDF.

Newns was a longtime sports official. He was one of the founders of the Oldtimers Bats and Balls Association, a group of former athletes and officials that meets four times a year at Randi’s.

The meetings usually attract more than 100 guests, and Newns used his old referee’s whistle to quiet the crowd when it was time to distribute awards. ••
