Thieves targeting car air bags

There were 52 thefts from autos recently reported in the 2nd Police District, and many of those crimes involved removal of vehicle air bags.

Thieves can get good money for the air bags, Capt. Frank Palumbo told members of the 2nd Police District Advisory Council on Jan. 13. How much? Hundred of bucks, maybe even thousands of dollars.

Hondas are favorite targets, and not just for their air bags, the 2nd District commander said. Rims, too, are getting swiped, he said.

In many of the air bag thefts, car doors were left unlocked, with many of the crimes committed overnight when the vehicles were left unattended.

The captain said the district has a population of 110,000, and added that the area’s immigrants are victimized in a higher proportion to the crimes they commit. The district is fifth in the city in the number of gunpoint robberies, he said.

A couple of dates for the PDAC events this year are: Saturday, June 6, for the Police Appreciation Day Barbecue; and Saturday, Sept. 19, for Community Day.

The PDAC’s next session will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at the Philadelphia Protestant Home, 6500 Tabor Ave. ••
