Canned food drive taking place at Holmesburg church

Mount Zion Baptist Church, 8101 Erdrick St. in Holmesburg, will hold a prayer walk and canned food drive on Monday, Jan. 19, at 11 a.m.

There will also be a recitation of an excerpt of Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail.”

The canned goods will be donated to Holmesburg United Methodist Church’s hot meal program. Soup will be served after the prayer walk.

MLK service day to be held at Lawncrest Rec on Monday

The Lawncrest Recreation Center, at Rising Sun Avenue and Comly Street, will host a Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 19, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The public is invited to paint and clean up the recreation center.

MLK breakfast to be held in Frankford

The Frankford Coalition of Neighbors’ 29th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast Celebration will be held at the Sankofa Freedom Academy Charter School, 4290 Penn St., on Monday, Jan. 19. Doors open at 8:30 a.m.

The event offers Frankford residents, neighborhood organizations, educational institutions, religious congregations, small business owners, community activists and anyone seeking information about improving their quality of life and better relations among diverse groups within the Frankford neighborhood.

This celebration includes a free breakfast, youth performances and community information.

Performances and program participants include Frankford High School ROTC and Dance Group, and Sankofa Freedom Academy.

Tax help available starting Jan. 27

The Campaign for Working Families, in collaboration with Turning Points for Children and the Frankford Community Development Corporation, will provide income tax help at the FAWN Food Pantry, 4346 Frankford Ave., Unit 2, for individuals who earned less than $20,000 and families that earned less than $52,000 in 2014.

Hours of operation are Tuesdays, 1 to 3:30 p.m., for pickups and dropoffs; Wednesdays and Thursdays, 3 to 6 p.m., for walk-in help; and Fridays, 1 to 3:30 p.m., for pickups and dropoffs.

NE school builds outdoor classroom

Frankford Friends School, 1500 Orthodox St., will construct an outdoor classroom on a vacant lot across the street from the school.

Children will be able to play, explore and be surrounded by native plants and trees, fruit and vegetable gardens, and urban wildlife such as birds, salamanders and butterflies.

“This space will allow FFS students and, hopefully, neighborhood children lots and lots of time falling in love with nature,” said principal Penny Colgan-Davis.

The outdoor classroom will have raised bed gardens where students and their families can grow food. ••

Benefit set for scholarship funds

A benefit to support local police scholarship funds will take place on Saturday, Jan. 24, from 8 p.m. to midnight at Twining Hall, 4900 E. Street Road in Trevose.

Tickets cost $35, and guests must be 21 or older to attend. Admission includes beer, wine, disc jockey, hot buffet, salads and desserts.

Corporate sponsorships are available, and donations are being accepted for a raffle table.

All proceeds benefit the Bucks County Heroes, Sgt. Patrick McDonald and Officer John Pawlowski scholarship funds. All donations are tax deductible.

Trip planned for Wildwood

Salem Harbour Apartments is sponsoring a four-day, three-night trip to Wildwood, New Jersey, June 1–4.

Venison dinner is Jan. 25

The Danube Swabian Association, 1277 Southampton Road, will host a venison dinner from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25.

Cost is $18 for adults and $9 for children. The menu includes venison goulash, venison sauerbraten, venison meatballs, mashed potatoes, vegetables, soup, coffee and dessert.

North Catholic wrestling reunion

A North Catholic wrestling reunion will take place on Saturday, Jan. 31, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Post Office Cafe, 2696 Bridge St. in Bridesburg.

Tickets cost $30 and will include food and an open bar.

Joel DeJesus, class of 1994, will be inducted into the North Catholic Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Proceeds will benefit any Catholic League city wrestler who qualifies for the PIAA championships.

Local company gets state loan to expand

Printfly Corporation, a custom printing, embroidery and screen shop, will acquire and renovate a site in the Byberry East Industrial Park, creating 53 jobs.

The company received a low-interest loan from the state.

“The competition for financial help from the state is fierce, and Printfly has shown its commitment to helping improve the local economy,” said state Sen. Mike Stack.

The Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority approved a $1.44 million loan for Printfly to acquire an existing building

Aria Health program honored

Aria Health’s Lung Screening Program has been distinguished as a Center of Excellence by the Lung Cancer Alliance for its continued commitment to providing responsible lung cancer screenings. The program will join more than 225 elite screening centers across the country recognized as a Center of Excellence.

Aria Health’s Lung Screening Program offers low dose CT scans for early detective of lung cancer. Low dose CT scans performed safely and efficiently save thousands of lives each year, as they are more effective at detecting early onset of lung cancer than traditional x-rays. These CT scans are recommended for those with a history of heavy smoking, current smokers and smokers who have quit within the last 15 years and who are aged 55 to 80.

“These lung screenings truly are life-saving programs that can help detect the earliest signs of lung cancer, which is one of the deadliest forms of the disease,” said Kathleen Kinslow, president and CEO of Aria Health.

Registration for World Meeting of Families begins

Archbishop Charles J. Chaput has announced that registration has begun for the 2015 World Meeting of Families which will be held in Philadelphia next Sept. 22 to 25. Individuals and families can register via worldmeeting2015.org/plan-yout-visit/register for the four-day congress at the Pennsylvania Convention Center and also book hotel rooms. Multiple options are available for participation and pricing, allowing delegates to select a package that best suits their needs.

In addition, organizers are seeking volunteers to participate in the Host a Family Program for the event. Residents in the Philadelphia region including South Jersey, Delaware and the Lehigh Valley are eligible. More than 10,000 delegates from 150 nations are expected to attend the congress, which will be followed by a visit to Philadelphia by Pope Francis on Sept. 26 and 27.
