Friends Hospital donates to police district advisory councils

It was big money — in more ways than one.

Employees of Friends Hospital last week presented large checks to two police district advisory councils to help fund their many programs. The physical dimensions of the checks were of the over-sized variety often used in such presentations, but it was the zeroes seen last week at the hospital’s Scattergood Building that were really impressive to representatives of the 15th and 24th Police District Advisory Councils.

Each received $2,000.

Allan Leppart, the 15th PDAC’s president, said his group welcomed the aid and will use some of the money for its annual Christmas party for area children.

The hospital’s employees raised the cash themselves by raffling off gift baskets and one incredibly loaded Christmas tree, but that doesn’t really begin to describe the fundraising.

First, workers were organized into 10 teams, with each getting $75 seed money from management. Then, each team proceeded to solicit donations so they could pack the baskets with gift cards and other items. Finally, they raffled off the baskets, raising more than $2,000.

Then, they brought in an additional $2,000 by raffling off a Christmas tree. It was 7-feet tall and was decorated with gift cards worth a total of $3,000, so, y’know, big. ••
