Holmesburg Library has story time for preschool children

Holmesburg Library, 7810 Frankford Ave. (at Hartel Avenue), will hold a preschool story time on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 10:30 a.m.

Free health expo to be held Saturday outside Neshaminy Mall

Holy Redeemer Hospital’s Cardiovascular Center will present a free Heart Healthy Expo on Saturday, Feb. 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. outside the Macy’s at Neshaminy Mall.

The event will offer consumers a range of health information and screenings, including blood pressure screenings; body mass index analysis; sleep better information; stroke assessments; opportunities to review current prescriptions with a pharmacist; a chance to spin the Holy Redeemer Cardiovascular Center wheel; free hand massages; chair exercise demonstrations for desk-bound workers; heart-healthy refreshments; heart healthy information for kids; and exercise demonstrations by the Northeast Family YMCA.

Macy’s will be offering free makeup consultations and chances to win a fragrance or cosmetic gift basket and a $200 Macy’s gift card.

In addition, a Macy’s Fashion Show will take place at 1 p.m.

Free tax help is now available through RSVP/ Phialdelphia

Trained volunteers from RSVP/Philadelphia are offering to help people prepare simple tax returns and other documents free of charge at the Klein JCC, 10100 Jamison Ave.

To receive tax preparation help, individuals must have an annual income of $60,000 or less.

SEPTA police chief to visit Frankford Civic meeting

SEPTA’s police chief, Thomas Nestel III, will speak to Frank-ford Civic Association members about his force’s operations at neighborhood El stops during their meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, at St. Mark’s Church, 4442 Frank-ford Ave. Attendees may park in the church’s lot and enter by the side door. ••

Saturday’s beef and beer will benefit man with brain tumor

A beef-and-beer fundraiser will take place on Saturday, Feb. 7, from 7 to 11 p.m. at Fran Lee Caterers, 4556 Almond St. in Bridesburg, for a man with a malignant brain tumor.

Sean Gallagher, 30, was recently diagnosed with a rare brain cancer. He had been the sole provider for his fiancé Kristin Markley and their three children, but can no longer work.

Knitting workshop is Feb. 11

Holmesburg Library, 7810 Frankford Ave. (at Hartel Avenue), will be having an arm knitting workshop for adults on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 1 p.m.

Orleans Tech offers training

Orleans Technical Institute, 2770 Red Lion Road, is accepting applications for Project World of Work, which begins March 10.

The 16-week training program teaches hands-on career skills in weatherization and property maintenance, including basics in carpentry, plumbing and electrical.

The program is free for Philadelphia residents age 18–21, have dropped out of high school and meet income requirements. Transportation money is provided.

Classes are held weekdays and include GED test preparation twice a week. Students earn a trades diploma.

Book review is at Randi’s

Longtime educator Irene Reiter will conduct a book review and discussion centered around JoJo Moyes’ romantic novel The Girl You Left Behind on Tuesday, March 10, at noon at Randi’s Restaurant, 1619 Grant Ave.

Tickets cost $25 and include lunch. Proceeds will go to RSVP Philadelphia, a volunteer program for people 55 and older.

Designer Bag Bingo to be held

St. Martin of Tours, 5450 Roosevelt Blvd., will host its second annual Designer Bag Bingo on Friday, March 20, in its gym. The snow date is March 27.

Doors open at 6 p.m. The first game will be at 7 p.m.

The cost is $30. All players must be 21 or older. There will be light refreshments, door prizes, a 50–50 drawing and tombola baskets.
